Barbara Burns

The Place To Be

Books rainbow the room.
Sense of leather and glue
swirl about me.
My pine rocker whispers
old stories
to the weathered oak floor.

"Autumn" spins itself out
in pensive, haunting tones
from the gramophone
while glowing leaves
turn slowly
beyond the glass.

Wrapped in the aster afghan,
I watch hungry birds
parachute onto the feeder,
join jostling, raucous diners,
then fly away to places known
only to them.

The marmalade cat sprawls
in sun-warmed bliss
across terra cotta tiles.
Yeasty scents of baking bread
rise to fill the shadows
with its own color -

contentment.
