Carolyn Caci

Love Affair

"I'm a rock," he once told me,
"Strong, steady, unshakable."
I was intrigued.
Rocks have their appeal, after all --
from colored pebbles you collect by the seashore,
to high mountain promontories you lean on to enjoy the view.
Yes, rocks are clearly to be admired.

Rocks are also hard, however --
unmovable, unaware of others' feelings,
stubborn and set in their ways.
A rock can easily roll over you, and
hurt you if you bump into its ragged edges.
Yes, rocks can also be dangerous.

On the other hand,
there is warmth in a sun-drenched rock,
and a rock overhang can provide a safe haven when things go awry
or a hiding place from life's cold realities.
Still, it's best to admire one from a distance,
and when dealing with a rock, you really must tread lightly
or you might start an avalanche.
