Raymond Fenech

Birth of a Mosquito

It slipped out almost transparent
from beneath satin space.

It reached with long proboscis,
beyond the day’s quivering,
outlined by cascading colours:

its vibrancy increased
like a Harrier jet charging its engine:

then, as if it remembered
it could breathe above water,
it shot out into space with a fulminating buzz,
that was soon part of an orchestrated hum

Biography

I have worked as a freelance journalist and reporter for most of the local leading newspapers, including In-Nazzjon, Il-Mument, The Democrat, The Times and Sunday Times (1979-1986). I also edited two nation-wide distributed glossy magazines, The Globe Trotter and Living 2000 (1998-2001).My poetry, essays, articles and short stories have been published by over 70 small press publishers, locally and in Sicily, the UK, Scotland, Ireland, France, the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and Argentina. My research on Malta ghost stories was recently published in THE INTERNATIONAL DIRECTORY OF HAUNTED PLACES, by Penguin Books in Putnam, USA. I am currently working on my fourth collection of poetry, “Forgotten Fairytales” which is scheduled to be published under the Canadian Poetry Association’s imprint.
